Birr Telescope Restoration

Between 1845 and 1919 the telescope at Birr Castle enabled the
first steps to be made at understanding our universe. It was through
the Birr telescope that the spiral nature of our galaxy was
witnessed and led to the further development of our search for the
origins of the universe.
The telescope was built between 1842 and 1845 by William Parsons,
the third Earl of Rosse. During its lifetime it provided astronomers
from all over the world with an opportunity to advance their
knowledge and theory.
Up to 1914, when it was dismantled, it remained the largest
telescope in the world. It was built in Ireland with Irish
engineering skills and knowledge.
It has now been restored as a testament to those achievements of the
past and we are pleased to have played a part in the restoration as
a 'living' exhibit.
